Textured Paint Colors: Why Do Sample Colors Look Different on the Wall?

When it comes to textured paint, color is often one of the things customers spend the most time deciding on.
This is especially true for customers choosing textured paint for the first time.
Usually, they start by sending us a photo and asking:
“Can you match this color?”
We tell them yes, we can work on it.
Then comes the next question:
“Do you have a color chart?”
We send it over, and the questions start all over again.
Should it be a little darker? What about a lighter shade? Would a warmer tone look better, or should we go with something cooler?
After going back and forth for a while, customers sometimes find that the color on their computer screen still looks the best.
We see this quite often.
The thing is, when it comes to wall colors, especially textured finishes, a photo on your phone or computer is not enough to make the final decision.
Why Does the Same Color Look Different on the Wall?
The reason is actually quite simple.
On a flat color sample, light tends to reflect across a relatively even surface.
Textured paint is different. The wall has raised and recessed areas, and light hits each part at a different angle. This creates variations in how the color appears across the surface.
With a deeper texture, the wall may look more layered, with stronger contrasts between light and shadow. A smoother finish, on the other hand, may look softer and more uniform.
Lighting makes a difference, too. Natural daylight and artificial lighting can make the same color appear warmer, cooler, brighter or darker.
So we generally don’t recommend choosing a final color based only on a digital image, particularly for large projects such as hotels and commercial spaces.
Whenever possible, it’s better to review a physical sample made with the actual finish.

Sometimes, It’s Not Just the Color Customers Like. It’s the Overall Look.
This is something we’ve noticed through our project work.
A customer might send us a photo and say:
“I want this gray.”
But when we look more closely, we often find that the customer is drawn to more than the gray itself.
It could be the natural matte finish, the subtle variations in the texture, or the way light and shadow give the wall more depth.
If we focus only on matching the color, the result may be close in shade but still look quite different from the reference photo.
That’s why, when discussing a project with a customer, we look at several things together:
- Color: Is it a warm gray, a cool gray, or something in between?
- Texture: Should the surface be fine and subtle or rough and pronounced?
- Light and shade: Should the wall look uniform, or should it have more visible depth?
- Surface finish: Should it be matte, soft-looking or slightly reflective?
- Lighting conditions: Will the wall be viewed in natural daylight, warm lighting or cool lighting?
All these details work together to create the final look. Color is only one part of the picture.
When Making a Sample, Don’t Just Look at a Small Color Patch
If a customer only wants to get an initial idea of the color, a small sample may be enough.
But for a larger project, we recommend making a sample that shows the actual application method and texture as well.
For example, if the customer wants a natural stone effect, simply mixing a stone-like color and applying it to a flat board won’t tell the whole story. The texture needs to be included, too.
Color and texture influence each other. Without the right surface effect, even a close color match may not deliver the appearance the customer expects.
That’s also why, when preparing samples for overseas customers, we try to understand the project first.
Is it a villa or a hotel? Is the finish for a feature wall or a large wall area? Will the space have warm lighting or plenty of natural daylight? How many square meters need to be covered?
The clearer the project details are, the easier it is for us to recommend a suitable product, texture and color.

One More Thing: Don’t Expect Every Hand-Finished Wall to Look 100% Identical
This may sound a little counterintuitive, but it’s worth discussing before a project begins.
Sometimes customers send us a photo they found online and say:
“I want it to look exactly the same.”
With a printed surface, reproducing an image may be relatively straightforward. A hand-applied wall finish is different.
The final result can be influenced by the substrate, the application technique, the applicator and the lighting in the space. Even when the same product and color are used, subtle variations may occur.
What we want to confirm with the customer is that the overall color, texture and design direction are right.
The goal isn’t to compare a finished wall with a phone photo and look for a tiny difference from every angle.
A beautiful textured wall should have a natural sense of depth and variation. That’s part of what makes decorative wall coatings different from a standard, flat paint finish.
Why We Prefer to Confirm the Sample Before Ordering
Our preferred process is straightforward:
First, confirm the color.
Next, confirm the texture and application method.
Then, review the finished sample under lighting conditions as close as possible to those of the actual project.
Once these details are agreed upon, it’s much easier to move forward with the order and avoid unnecessary misunderstandings later.
Spending a little more time on samples at the beginning can save a lot of trouble during application.
At Montage, we offer a range of decorative wall coating solutions, including microcement, natural stone effects, travertine-inspired finishes and other artistic textures. We can help customers explore different options based on their design references and project requirements.
If you’re looking for textured paint and already have a color or reference image in mind, feel free to send it to us.
You don’t need to know the exact product name before getting in touch.
Show us the look you’re aiming for, and we’ll work with you to find a suitable solution.
